After three of the days five special stage Jon Williams/Cobus Vrey (Sasol Racing Rally Team Ford Fiesta) have taken over the lead of the Toyota Gauteng Dealer Rally after overnight leaders Jan Habig/Robert Paisley (Basil Read Ford Fiesta) picked up a puncture on the second stage and lost nearly two minutes. They are now fourth behind Williams/Vrey, Jean-Pierre Damseaux (Team Total Toyota Auris), Hein Lategan/Johan van der Merwe SAC Peugeot 207 and ahead of Hans Weijs/Bjorn Degandt who has closed to fifth place after starting sixth this morning.
Gemmell/ Swan has moved up to seventh at the expense of Zulu/ Peskin and team mates Poulter/Coetzee has dropped out of the event with engine problems while lying eight. Despite the thick dust the strong wind is leaving the way clear for the competitors.
Punctures remain a serious risk with the final gravel stage, a repeat of Saturday’s stage one which was so problematic from a tyre point of view, still ahead. The final tarmac stage at Zwartkops Raceway is now just two stages away.
