Jan Habig has announced that he will be competing in the tenth round of the 2012 World Rally Championship, the Wales Rally of Great Britain, to be run from 13 – 16 September 2012.
He will be a member of the M-Sport World Rally Team during the September round of the 2012 World Rally Championship to be run in Wales, Great Britain. “I will be participating in a WRC spec Ford Fiesta, running in the colours and insignia of my South African sponsor, Basil Read,” added an excited Habig.
Habig competed in the 1994 Network Q Rally as a privateer and surprised the world by finishing a credible 8th overall in a Ford Escort built and prepared by Habig in South Africa. He started his rally career in 1983 as a privateer, and soon found himself as a member of the Nissan Works team. He joined VW in 1994 and won six South African Rally Driver championships. Habig made his debut in the S2000 Ford Fiesta, sponsored by Basil Read on the Total Tour Natal earlier this year. Currently Habig is placed third overall on the 2012 South African Championship standings after finishing second and third respectively in the last two championship events.
“I look forward to rallying with the professional M-Sport team, and believe that we will gain a tremendous amount of knowledge,” Habig said. “I am confident that we will be in a position to apply this knowledge and further enhance the performance of our SA Ford Fiesta, not only for the remainder of the season, but also for the future,” he added.
Due to the change of dates on the SA Rally calendar, Jan will not participate in the next round of the SA Championship to be held in the Western Cape as it now clashes with the World Championship event. “I will be partnered by an international navigator, and this announcement will follow shortly,” he concluded.
