IMG is to launch the Americas Rallycross Championship (ARX) in 2018. IMG, which also promotes the FIA World Rallycross Championship (World RX), will run ARX for the headline rallycross Supercar category and ARX2 for Supercar Lites.
Paul Bellamy, SVP and Managing Director, Motorsports, IMG, commented: “Rallycross is a perfect match for the way we digest entertainment today: short, sharp wheel-to-wheel races that are packed with action. ARX is a very exciting opportunity to use our experience from World RX to grow the sport in the Americas. We see huge potential in ARX and will work closely with all key stakeholders and possible new venues to develop ARX into a major championship over the next few years.”
The 2018 ARX Championship will feature four events and will see IMG hold the inaugural race at Silverstone, England, on May 25-27, as part of the Speedmachine Festival, which will also include a round of World RX.
Other events on the calendar for both ARX and ARX2 will be Trois-Rivières in Canada on August 4-5, and Circuit of the Americas, in Austin, Texas, on September 29-30. Both events are also part of IMG’s annual FIA World Rallycross Championship. IMG is finalizing the details of the fourth event, to be held in the USA.
Manufacturers Volkswagen of America and Subaru of America, which will provide substantial support to ARX, intend to enter supercars into the Championship. Superstar Volkswagen drivers Tanner Foust and Scott Speed are among those committed to participating, as well as leading Subaru drivers Patrik Sandell and Chris Atkinson.
Greg Lucia, Director, Experiential Marketing, Volkswagen, said: “Volkswagen of America, in conjunction with our technical partner Andretti Autosport, intends to enter ARX in 2018 with a factory-supported supercar rallycross team. We are very excited about the future of rallycross in North America and look forward to finalizing all details with IMG and working closely with them to help make ARX a success.”
Rob Weir, Motorsports Marketing Manager, Subaru, said: “IMG has done a fantastic job with the World RX platform, so we’re keen to integrate the Subaru Rally Team USA program in the upcoming ARX series under its guidance.”
Cooper Tires will be the Official Tire Partner, and will supply the same high quality tires that they provide for World RX.
